Eyeball-it Mushroom Soup

Stock: Vegetable and Chicken
Carrots, Celery, Onion, Thyme
Cream or Half and Half
Olive oil/Butter

This is mostly an non-measured soup and super easy to make. It's very hearty and satisfying on a cold winter evening!
Take a soup pot and add a healthy drizzle of olive oil and a 1" pat of butter. Let it melt.
Add 1/2 of one yellow diced onion and one garlic clove (minced). Cook until onion starts to turn clear (about 4 minutes).
Add chopped mushrooms--use any you like, but chop them the same size for even cooking. I use portabella, shitakke, and button.
Add some thyme (about 1 tsp.).
Cook for about 5 minutes. You can also add some diced carrots and celery.
Once mushrooms and veggies are starting to cook, add 2 cans of vegetable stock and one can of chicken stock.
Add a healthy dose of sherry (about 1/4 cup).
Cover and cook on simmer for about 40 minutes. Stir now and then.

Makeup Tip: How to Revive Old Mascara

Don't know about you, but I've got about 5 tubes at any given time of mascara. Some are high-end, some drugstore, but all share one thing: They dry up. It may be because I live in a very dry climate, but here's something I do to revive them to a glossy, creamy texture vs. the dry, clumpy texture they've become. Just run hot water in your basin and plop the tube (make sure it's closed tightly). Let the hot water run over the tube while you do something else (line your eyes, apply concealer, etc.). Then, after a few moments (about 60-90 seconds is enough), your mascara should be nice revived!

Honest Review: Perricone Cold Plasma Sub-D TV Offer: First Look

I am a sucker for infomercials (as you know if you read this blog!). Well, as an anti-aging diva (self-proclaimed, of course), I had to check out the Perricone Sub-D.

I used Perricone when it first came on the market and I liked it well enough, except for the price. For the price I thought it should perform mircles, which it didn't (no mere cream or serum can). Fun amazon book! Check it out...  I watched just a few minutes of Dr. Oz today and was oh-so-happy to hear one of the guests talking about cellulite reducers. Once is to eat several spoonfuls of lycopene-packed tomato paste (uh, no thanks...not without some pasta!). But, the other was that eating pineapple would help reduce cellulite.

Bromelein is the cause and pineapple is packed with it (well, the stem is). But eating 1.5 cups of pineapple a day (or taking 500 mg. Bromelein supplement) will do the trick. Also, she said to eat it about 1.5 hours after dinner. A great sweet treat!

Middle-Aged Pudge: Tips to Help it Budge (Really!)

This is the bane of my existance lately! Middle-aged pudge. Ask almost any woman over the age of 40 and it will be on her top 10 (usually top 3) of things she is beyond frustrated about in getting a little older.

We can stay current, hip, glowing and fit, but the bit of pudge around of middles is a thing of mystery. We try eating less. No go. Working out more. No go. Working out and eating less. No go.

So what gives?

After hunkering down for the past three months to truly figure this out for myself, I've discovered a couple of things that have helped (me, at least). They are not miraculous, but they may help open your eyes a bit to your own plight.

1. Prescriptions: I was on birth control and a low-dose anti-anxiety (mostly to help me sleep). Both are certified weight-gainers (regardless of what most "professionals" will tell you--real people will tell you they gained weight on either or both). Best Primer for Filling Over 40 Skin Cracks

Terrific primer, if used correctly!

I've used a LOT of primers including Geller, Mercier, Smashbox, Olay. You get the idea. The one I'm most impressed with for filling hollows (under eyes) and cracks is definitely the Loreal Studio Secrets Magic Perfecting Base.

I'm not sure how "magic" it is, but this stuff does work. The trick it use it right. This one doesn't go all over the face, or you risk getting little "pills" of product that ball up under foundation. But...if you use it in just your most severely cracked areas (nose to mouth, forehead, eye area), you'll get super results.

Use a light hand with it. It is very heavy compared to other primers, hence it's great "filling" properties. I love it in my under-eye hollows that are forming. I apply this the fill the area, then my foundation and concealer. By layering lightly, I get a really nice finished look.

What is it?

Essentially it's simply working out for a MAXIMUM (huffing and puffing ad sweating) rate for a short time.

This means doing intervals that are super high intensity (squat jumps, plyometrics) for several seconds (20 or 30, usually) and then a short rest (10 or 15 seconds) and then repeating several times.

Hard? Yes. Great results fast? Yes. I've been doing this for a few weeks and I'm not legs are looking more toned than they have in 20 years.

It's fast and you basically "get in and get out." I'm loving it and you might too. Here's one to try (see below)...

What to do with crappy skincare products

Here's a tip:

Whenever you have the disappointing and frustrating experience of buying the next "miracle" skincare cream or serum that just absolutely promises to make you look 20 years younger (and doesn't)...put it on your bedside table.

Instead of letting old products that are less than thrilling collect dust in your bathroom or tossing them and completely losing money, just use them on your hands at night before bed.

Don't use plain, old handcream for anti-aging; use your reject skincare creams on your hands and then put on your handcream OVER the skincare, if necessary.

Doing this will help you anti-age your hands and provide a good way to use up products that don't seem to do much for your face. Since you rarely anti-age your hands, you'll see better results hereI've been doing this for a couple of years (religiously) and it really has helped my hands be less crepey and old looking.
